Search engines use keywords or key phrases (what you expect Internet users to search and come on your web page) when they include your website in their search results. Keywords are central to online presence. Wisely added keywords to the content of a website can improve its ranking, but overusing (spamming) them can cause a damage – Google’s Penguin and Panda updates last year were the nails in the coffin for over-optimized content and link profiles that have changed the old interpretation of keywords for ever.
Users (the one who search the Internet) are getting wiser and search technology is maturing. Users know what they’re looking for and search engines are getting much better at satisfying the user intent through their search results. So where does your brand – personal or commercial – fit into all this?
When identifying keywords (do your research), select words and phrases in the content of your website that someone is most likely to use when searching for your online concern. Each of your pages should have keywords that include phrases found throughout the page content, title tag, headings, attributes, and link text. If you have words and phrases that occur often, rearrange the order to keep each tag unique. Then you need to prioritized list of topics and figure out what content will satisfy the user intent and your brand goals.
Use different tools available (some of them free) online. I use SEO Profiler to see where my own web page ranks on search engines for specific keyword searches. It is a paid service that shows you the ranking information for saved keywords on your home page keywords, as well as keywords shared throughout the site.
So what are your key words and what content you write to satisfy the user intent and goals of your presence online? How do you integrate keywords in your conent? These are the real question.
